The Territory’s population is still very transient and it is getting close to the time of year when many people are planning on leaving and heading south. It’s difficult moving, especially if your leaving somewhere as great as the Territory. It can be as stressful for your pets as it is for you. Early planning will help reduce the stress to both of you.

Often it may be necessary to board your pets while moving. Most boarding kennels and catteries are very busy during holidays so make sure you book as soon as possible or risk missing out. Make sure your pets vaccinations are up to date and cover all the diseases necessary. Kennels requirements vary so check with them early incase your pet needs topping up.

If you are planning on flying with your pet you will need to have an airline approved pet carrier. These can be bought or hired. If you already own one make sure it is in good shape and is clean and safe. Don’t be tempted to cram your pet into too small a container. Make sure your pet can stand up straight and lie down without being cramped.

Many people ask me about sedating their pet before flying. In most cases it is unadvisable. It does carry some significant risks, so always check with your vet first.

Unfortunately some people use the excuse that they are moving to dump their pets. Don’t! It is almost always possible to move with your pets it just takes more work. If you work for defence and are being transfered then you definitely have no excuse. The defence services are very generous in providing for their people to move with their pets.

No pet is to big or to small to take with you but if you are moving with pets other than dogs or cats make sure you have all the right permits from both ends.
